The Supernatural Thrill

I sometimes rued the day I was bitten. As a former office worker and a loner, I was accustomed to mundane moments. But all changed when one day, I was bitten. It was no story of love or heartbreak, but a regular one. I was coming home, and I felt something warm trickle on my neck, a wetness in my collar. When I saw it, I was surprised to see blood and feel two holes on the back of my neck. Suddenly the spectacles, which I had been wearing since I was 10, suddenly seemed blurry. When I took them off, I was surprised to see that I could see just fine. Suddenly, I heard laughing behind me. I looked back to see a young woman, presumably in her early 20s, laughing her head off. "What's so funny, if I may ask?" I said. "Nothing, nothing. I just tried an experiment and apparently, it was a success." She replied, still laughing. "What experiment?" I asked. This was getting weirder by the second.

"I tried to see if I could make a vampire out of an oaf like you, and apparently I was successful." I couldn't believe my ears. The amount of vampire movies I'd watched and books I'd read as a child were ridiculous. "Ooh, do I get nightvision now, and super strength? And shapeshift? Teleportation?" I could hardly contain my excitement. "Yes, yes." She replied in a bored voice. "But I think it is the time for introductions. I'm Celeste. Who are you?" She asked. "I'm Nathan." I replied. And thus began my vampire story.

But all my hopes were dashed when I found out that there was no Organization, no secret society of vampires, nothing. We were just supposed to hang out in an abandoned house by the day, and just roam around aimlessly at night. Being a vampire meant that you could eat today and not eat for a year, and still not feel hungry. Also, it was not like we had to hunt unsuspecting humans in the dead of the night. Vampires had evolved in such a way (Celeste explained) that we could have regular food as well.

"I'm bored" I exclaimed. I had thought that being inducted into the supernatural world would be interesting, but all we'd been doing was passing the time. "I used to read about the adventures vampires had in the undead world, about how they fought humans, and all other kinds of supernatural creatures! I wanted to see the fairies, the werewolves, the trolls, the dragons and all that. But all I got to see were two leprechauns who couldn't even grant wishes and that slow old lady doing her shopping. Even my boss yelling at me was more interesting than this." "Well, sorry for that!" Celeste replied sarcastically. "I know you wanted to be friends with the fairies and fight a werewolf every other day, but you are stuck with boring old Celeste instead. Go out and leave me alone, you idiot!"

Not wanting to argue with a lady, I did as I was told. I went to the regular Chinese restaurant because I was feeling a bit peckish. In the alley beside the restaurant, I heard a scream. I went there to find a man on the floor, and a lady running towards me. They were both trying to run from a man who was acting somewhat weird. He was gradually growing in height, his hands morphing into paws, his body growing hair all over. He let out a savage howl and jumped on the man. My body acted on instinct and I jumped between the man and the werewolf. We tusseled, he was strong, and I had a strength I had never felt in my previous life. After what seemed like a lifetime, I was able to catch the wolf in a chokehold and hold him like that. I meant to let him go, but my hands gradually tightened around his neck until he couldn't move. Leaving him unconscious, I got up and suddenly got a flash right in my eyes.

The next morning, Celeste was shouting at me for something to do with the newspaper. I looked in the newspaper and on the front page was a story SUPERNATURAL OCCURRENCES IN THE CITY! EDITOR-IN-CHIEF AND WIFE NARROWLY ESCAPE A VAMPIRE AND A WEREWOLF ATTACK! "Don't you know, you dumbo? Vampires and werewolves are sworn enemies. You messed up big time. The wolves will be looking for revenge. It's high time we got all the vampires together to fight against them." Celeste said. And that's when I realized that the curtain on my supernatural life was raising, and I savored every moment of it.
